As a group of university students, the opportunity to present the story of 17 rare disease patients to the general public in the form of a collection of biographies is an invaluable opportunity not only for us students, but also for our group of rare disease patients, as due to the rarity of their diseases, it is complex for them to get their story out and gain enough traction and social awareness for the society to not only recognize them, but also to understand their struggles well enough to help them effectively.

In recent years, concentrated Chinese medicine granules (CCMGs) have been commonly used by Chinese medicine clinics. Its containers are recyclable HDPE (Type 2 plastics) bottles. Recyclink HK initiated the “100k CCMGs Containers Collection Campaign” (the campaign), envisioning the establishment of a self-sustainable recycling network among clinics. The campaign helped testify to the demand for recycling services of clinics. In addition, we aimed at giving impetus to at least one CCMGs manufacturer to bear the recycling cost in 2022. Supported by a local recycling plant New Life Plastic, we managed to arrange door-to-door collections for 30 clinics weekly. With a year’s effort, 104,565 pieces of containers have been collected. This practice has successfully drawn the attention of the market-leading medicine manufacturer Nong’s (農本方), and triggered the company to implement its own pilot scheme for package collection.

Dream Compassioneers

Joint-school International Volunteering Organisation for Education – Dream Compassioneers (DC) is a non-profit organisation. DC aims to provide daily necessities and education opportunities for school children in poverty-stricken regions all over the world, improving their life in the long term. For services, DC organises “Dream Compassioneers Free Tuition Service”, aiming at facilitating students with financial needs in their educational progress.

To enhance the life and education opportunities of school children in the long term, DC has organised several social advocacy activities, for instance, “1st DC Debate Competition”, “Online Talk: Passion to Talk, Talk to Inspire”, and “DC Speaking Contest”. Through these activities, we wish to encourage audience members to reflect on their personal experiences, hence strengthening their understanding of current issues related to children’s rights, education, and poverty.

BE-Active Fitness

With the assistance in promotion from educational NGOs, we targeted lower primary students from underprivileged families. Our workout class adopted a small-class-size to closely monitor each student’s posture, needs, and safety. Each batch contains four 45-minute sessions, and a total of three batches were held. 23 eligible primary one to three students joined our fitness project. We customised workout programmes that balance each children’s needs. We designed a few different sets of exercises, challenges, and games to maintain participants’ interests and motivations. The session was concluded by students’ feedback on exercise intensity and feelings in order to improve our programme. We recommend children to do some exercises for a few minutes whenever possible, so that regular exercising habits can be built, no matter during or after the pandemic. We collected comments and feedback from parents and participants, which were all positive and encouraging.

Teaching the deaf community music

I have studied Hong Kong Sign Language for 2 years, and found myself more connected to society through signing with the deaf community and learning about their culture. As a music student, I want to try my best to let them have a taste of what music is, even if they do not have complete hearing skills. Therefore, I started teaching my sign language teacher piano. I sincerely felt that my teacher enjoyed the piano lesson from the bottom of her heart. I felt very touched indeed while teaching my teacher, as I could connect deaf people with music, a realm that they might never have encountered before. Therefore, I wish I could continue to contribute to society and teach the deaf community music.
