Symposium

Symposium on Service-Learning 2019

Symposium on Service-Learning was successfully hosted on 30 March 2019 at Lecture Theatre 2, Esther Lee Building by College’s Service-Learning Centre. Guest speakers included Professor CHEN Li Hua , Graduate Institute of Curriculum and Instruction, Tamkang University, Taiwan, Mr. PANG Woon Kei, Antony, Deputy Executive Director, The Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council, Mr. SO Pui Kin, Stanley, Education Manager, Oxfam, Hong Kong, Mr. CHAN Kwok Bong, Supervisor (Tuen Mun District and Corporate Development), The Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong and Mr. Donald HUNG, Programme Manager, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. About 80 participants joined the symposium, which was an excellent platform for the exchange of good practices on service-learning among the participating teachers and students from tertiary institutions and secondary schools as well as social workers from NGOs.

 

Symposium on Service-Learning 2016

This Symposium held by the Centre aims to gather educators, students and service-learning practitioners in secondary schools and higher education institutes to share their knowledge, experience and good practices in Service-Learning.

Professor MA Lai Chong Joyce from the Department of Social Work of The Chinese University of Hong Kong will deliver a keynote speech on “Service Learning on Personal Growth and Social Capital Basis”. Representatives from different community services organizations will share the topic on “Sharing and Foresight of Service Learning Experience from Local, Mainland China and International Prospective" during plenary session at the Symposium. Participants can exchange their experience on service learning through various discussions, and hence promote the development of service learning in schools and society.

 

Conference on Service-Learning in Chinese Societies 2015

The Conference was organized by the Service-Learning Centre of Chung Chi College, CUHK, in collaboration with the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia and the Department of Social Work and Social Policy, NankaiUniversity on 22 May 2015. The Conference aimed at providing scholars and practitioners with a platform to exchange and contribute to academic research on service-learning.

   

Symposium on Service-Learning 2014

 

In promoting good practice of Service-Learning, we organized a Symposium on Service-Learning on Saturday, 22 March 2014. The Symposium gathered educators, students and service-learning practitioners in secondary schools and higher education institutes to share their knowledge, experience and good practices in Service-Learning. Two Keynote Speeches were delivered by Professor Ngai Sek Yum Steven and Professor Lau Tai Shing.

 

 

Workshop

Empowering Students through Service-Learning: Curriculum Design, Critical Reflection and Programme Evaluation 2018

The workshop “Empowering Students through Service-Learning: Curriculum Design, Critical Reflection and Programme Evaluation” was conducted on 20, 21 March 2018 at Chung Chi Alumni Room. Dr. Barbara JACOBY, an experienced international service-learning expert, was invited as the workshop speaker. About 30 teaching and administrative staff from CUHK and other tertiary institutions joined the workshop. The areas of integrating service-learning in to curriculum, critical reflection from design to assess through facilitation, and evaluation of service-learning courses were focused.

 

Power up Learning in Service-Learning: Reflection Design, Action Techniques and Using Apps in Facilitating Reflections 2018

The workshop “Power up Learning in Service-Learning: Reflection Design, Action Techniques and Using Apps in Facilitating Reflections” was conducted on 6 Feb 2018 at Chung Chi Alumni Room. The Project team on deep learning strategies development, from the Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of HK was invited as the workshop trainers. About 35 teaching and administrative staff from CUHK and other tertiary institutions joined the workshop. Participants learnt some skills and tools in enhancing students’ participation in reflection, including using some Apps as facilitation.

 

3-day Training Workshop: Effective Service-Learning Programmes 2015

The 3-day workshop covered topics ranging from programme design to implementation, reflection and evaluation, assessment on student achievement, and university-community partnerships. Mr. Joseph Edward Brooks, Executive Director of Community Works Institute (Los Angeles, USA) and an experienced international service-learning expert, was invited to conduct four training sessions on 4-5 February, 2015 about service-learning pedagogy and models, community needs assessment, program design and implementation, and evaluation of student outcomes and community impact. On 4 March, 2015, faculty members of the SLCCCC and their community partners shared their experiences in planning and implementing local and international service-learning programmes. Through the workshop, participants learnt to identify community resources and generated ideas for incorporating service-learning into their teaching and learning activities.
