Hi! My name is Moldir, I am a final-year undergraduate student coming from Kazakhstan, and like many of you, I arrived in Hong Kong having almost no friends or family here.

Throughout my studies at CUHK, I have joined numerous activities and initiatives to promote internationalisation, bridge all groups of students and get to know Hong Kong. Among them is a program with a special place in my heart – the Chung Chi Mentorship program.

Meeting Kai Yin, my mentor, became one of those “in the right place at the right time” events of my life. We immediately found common interests and topics. Kai Yin is extremely lively and active. From our first day till now, we went cycling and hiking, had night observational walks, visited concerts, and did many other interesting things. I have discovered Hong Kong from aspects I never knew existed!

Apart from all these exciting activities, Kai Yin is a true friend and a caring mentor. His empathy, compassion, kindness, sense of humour and wisdom helped me during challenging times. He remembers what it is like to be a university student and knows about the thoughts and struggles we go through. Our conversations and adventures make me realise the most important things in life and shape my mindset and values.

With Kai Yin, I found a family away from home, or better to say, a family at home, because he made Hong Kong a second home for me. I have never before felt as close to Hong Kong’s culture and lifestyle as with Kai Yin. I learned about local traditions and culture, became a guest in Kai Yin’s home, and even got a Chinese name!

I am sure that our friendship with Kai Yin will grow stronger and last long, and I am endlessly grateful to him for sharing his vision of life with my friends and me. I always think of our meeting as one of the greatest fortunes in my life. Thank you, Chung Chi College, for making this possible!
