GECC3230 Service-Learning Programme (Local) | Participants' Sharing

In 2022, students provide service to the following five groups:

Community Bridging | Acknowledgment: Citizens Organization Alliance

Introduction

In order to create a closer connection between the public and the community, we have designed a community activity in Yau Ma Tei. Through guided tours and games, residents and people who are interested in knowing the old stores can interact with the old store owners and help participants understand and observe the community. We hope to raise the public's awareness of the old stores in the community.

Tang Shuk Han | Cultural Management

I learnt that getting to know the community is not a difficult task. At first, I was not able to communicate with the people in the community but then I was able to interview the owners of the old stores. By taking the first step and being proactive in approaching the community, you can reap unexpected benefits.

Ding Chun Yeung | Electronic Engineering

I have learnt that community design can be a huge project that changes society, but it is also built by a pile of 'small actions'. Therefore, anything that can benefit society, no matter how big or small, should be done.

Ethnic Minorities | Acknowledgment: Ultimate United Hong Kong

Introduction

We hope to help ethnic minorities build community links and plant the seeds of “hope” in their minds. During our initial contact with the ethnic minorities, we found that they were encountering difficulties in using Chinese. As language is not only a bridge between them and the community, but also a tool for their further education and employment, we organize various Chinese learning activities for the ethnic minority children.

Lin Fung Tat | History

Although the power of one person is small, if everyone is willing to give a little and try to communicate with the ethnic minorities, the problem can be alleviated with understanding.

Wong Sze Tsit | History

If we can plant the seed of "hope" in the hearts of one or two children, that would be the greatest reward of our service.

Rehabilitated Substance Abusers and their Families | Acknowledgment: Rainbow Lutheran Centre, HKLSS

Introduction

We hope to enhance the interaction between the rehabilitated mothers and their children through various activities, and to strengthen their family relationships. We hope to raise their awareness of their health from the physical, mental, and social aspects and encourage them to apply the health information they have learnt from the programme in their daily lives.

Lam Tsz Ki | English

The Service-Learning Programme allowed me to meet people from different backgrounds who joined the rehabilitation programmes. Listening to the sharing of their experiences and lives has deepened my awareness and understanding of society.

Kwong Ka Tung | Nursing

In the past, when I encountered difficulties, I would complain about trivial things. Through participating in the service, I was able to understand life from a new perspective and realize that everyone has their own experiences. Fortune or misfortune depends on the attitude of the individual in facing life.

Students with Hearing Disability | SLCO Community Resources Limited

Introduction

The service aims to promote the personal growth of students with hearing disability in learning and social relationships. Through a two-month diversity programme, they can receive academic support and have more opportunities to interact with others, thereby developing their interpersonal skills and communication skills, as well as enhancing their teamwork and self-confidence.

Li Yuk Ting | Mathematics and Mathematics Education

Students with special needs are also normal students, each with their own uniqueness.

Chow Wing Yin Wynne | Music

The most important thing about communication between people is that the person you really want to get to know is the one you can naturally communicate with.

Students with Intellectual Disability| TWGHS Tsui Tsin Tong School (Boarding Section)

Introduction

As a result of the outbreak of the epidemic in the students' hostel, our programme was changed to a small-scale study. In view of the weakness of expression ability of the intellectually disabled students, we used questionnaires to understand the needs of the students during the epidemic from the perspective of their parents and hostel staff. In spite of this, we were glad to organize an activity in the hostel to spend a happy time with the students, to reach out, meet and care for them as friends.

Lam Kwan Ting | Chinese Language and Literature

Although things were not going as expected, I learnt the importance of not to blame but to serve. We learnt that we should hold a positive attitude and keep engaging ourselves in the service as far as we can.

Lau Tsz Ching | Nursing

Intellectually disabled students should not be labelled as problematic and we should patiently approach, invite them into our world and treat them as an individual who can only be understood through direct interactions.
